I have Office 2004 Version 11.6.6 for Mac, using OS 10.5.8. Where do I find info on what I need when I upgrade to Mac OS 10.6?

If I have to upgrade Office, can I upgrade to Office 2008, or will I have to go to Office 2011?

Pluses and minuses?

Office 2004 will work OK in OS X 10.6.X. However, that's the last version of OS X that it will work with as subsequent versions of OS X no longer support PPC apps which 2004 is. I strongly recommend updating to the latest version of Office for the Mac (2011).

Do you have a PowerPC or Intel Mac? If you're unsure, go to  > About This Mac.

Thanks for all the help. This is a slow process for me, so just following up now.

#1: So, I should be able to use all aspects of Office 2004 for Mac v. 11.6.6 when I upgrade to 10.6 without any problems? Somewhere I read something about Rosetta, which I don't really know much about except that my current Quicken 2007 is the Rosetta version and I will need to get the Lion addition for it when I go to 10.6 . What else do I need to know there?

I run 2008 on my MacBook and 2011 on my iMac. I like 2011 best but if you can find 08 cheap I would go for it because it is still really good software. Office Mac Home and Student 2011 - 1PC/1User [Download]:Amazon:Software
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition [Old Version]:Amazon:Software
There is a 30 dollar difference between the two.
Thanks for the info. I did a little research, though not exhaustive. It seems like the newer Office 2008 and 2011 for Mac, have changes. Like, no Excel or something like that. What do you know about that?

Word, PowerPoint and Excel are in all three versions of Office 2011.

RE: "Hang on to those original install discs like grim death!"--I have no idea where the Office 2004 discs are. Once I buy 2008 or 2011 I will have install discs, correct?

RE: "Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!" I don't understand what this means. Please translate into really basic language; I'm not much of a techie. These posts are my first ever posts on computer forums. Thx!

I have an Intel Mac. Does this make a difference?
Yes it does. If you didn't have an Intel Mac, you wouldn't be able to use Office 2011. However, since you do, you should be fine. The rest of the system requirements for 2011 can be found here.

Just for info: as from next week, Microsoft is withdrawing all support from Office 2008 (for Mac). Therefore, if it were me, I'd fork out for the 2011 version. Edit: which, as stated has PowerPoint, Excel, Word.

Excellent point. If you don't have either, there's no point purchasing the unsupported one.

An additional note here about the MS support for Office 2008 coming to an end next Tuesday (April 16th). The application will continue to function, however, MS will no longer provide updates such as security patches. But in the past MS has provided critical security updates for apps even after support has ended. Whether or not they do the same for Office 2008 is unknown. As stated above by myself and others, it's best to upgrade to Office 2011.

OK, thanks to all. Looks like I need to plan on Office 2011 for Mac when I upgrade.

I assume Mail, DVD, iPhoto, Photo Booth, iMovie, etc. come with 10.6 and 10.8; is that correct?

What else do I need to think about besides Quicken and MS Office? --Toast. Probably my printer? Adobe? I assume these are easy upgrades; is that correct?

The only included software that won't be present will be Front Row (this was removed with 10.7). However, iPhoto will need to be reinstalled separately.

As for what you need, that's up to you. Regardless, most of them should be easy upgrades. The only snag you may run into is the execution of PowerPC apps. If you have any of those, they will no longer run in 10.8. If you're unsure what this mean, right click an app > Get Info > Type (I think this is what it's labelled as). If it says PowerPC, it will not run in 10.8.

thumb drive = flash drive I guess.......but what makes it "bootable" or not?
