Avasti, the free virus software, has been scanning my system (hard drive & external drive) for nearly 24 hours. Is this normal or is something out of whack?

I'm not familiar with Avast, but I can tell you that you're wasting your time using it, and it might even be a dangerous app that will mess up your Mac. I say this because, firstly, Macs have no viruses that affect them, and secondly, a few other "antivirus" apps I have heard of cause problems. I would advise you to end the scan and delete Avast, since it can't do anything good for you, and is already misbehaving.

Do not install that thing on your Mac.

Have a read here and at the links posted.

If you must have an A/V, use one of the few that tested positively - inclg the updated ClamXav.

I also removed the links you had there - almost all links for that software are their own reviews - not legitimate 3rd parties.
They started out spamming forums, including this one, to promote their software.

The review is pure BS. Don't believe it as there at least a dozen other reviews and user input statements plus numerous threads that state otherwise. MacKeeper is pure snake oil. Stay away from it and get rid of Avast as you've been advised.

As the others have stated - seriously?

MacKeeper and Avast? Keep a wide berth.
