How about telling us some more information? Which version of MS Office are you trying to reinstall and what version of OS X are you running? Some info about your Mac will also help.

Unless you specifically excluded Excel from loading, Mac Office 2011 will install it automatically along with Word and Powerpoint. (And Outlook depending on version.) Did Word and Powerpoint get installed OK?

Try reinstalling Mac Office 2011 once more. You can't just specify Excel though, you have to reinstall everything: Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. Make sure when you select what to install that you open the selection tree fully. Otherwise you'll miss some things.

I did try that. It is saying to check with developer, excel may not work with the version of Mac OS X. I have also installed all the updates that are available.

Something is not right then because the Mac Office 2011 applications work just fine with OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I used them on Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion and Mountain Lion.

Where did you get your version of Mac Office 2011? Is it on disk from Microsoft?

Before a few hours ago it was working fine.
Anyway-
I have a disk for Best Buy I got with the computer, two years ago. Then I downloaded it from my University today to see if that made a difference.

So you're saying both versions of Office Mac 2011, the disk version, and the downloaded version from your university refuse to install Excel?

The icon is there. Clicking on it says that there is a problem. MS excel cannot be opened because of a problem. So I reloaded it from the disk, same problem. Downloaded from the U and same problem.

OK. Either the Office data base is corrupt or one of the libraries . You're going to have to completely uninstall Office 2011 and reinstall again. Since Office 2011 does not have an uninstaller, you'll need to follow the directions given by Microsoft to completely remove it. You have to remove everything or the reinstall will not work.

The uninstall instructions can be found here.
