exporting a slide show from iphoto to i DVD

Export your slideshow from iPhoto. Choose a resolution that nearest matches that of your photos. That will give you a movie file.
Open up iDVD and just drag and drop that file into the main iDVD Project window, edit iDVD's menus/dropzones as required and then burn.
Just be aware that standard dvd resolution is only 720x576/480, so your photos won't look as good from the dvd as they did originally.
