My 2009 iMac has started to start up by itself from shutdown. In Energy Saver/Schedule Start up or Wake is not ticked.

What can I do to stop this behaviour?

Just to be absolutely clear -- you mean completely powered off? Or just sleep?

Completely powered off. I shut it down at night, but in the morning it has turned itself back on.

(I shut it down because I have a nifty stand-by power device which switches off devices with stand-by power, when the Mac itself is shut down. Power is returned to them when the Mac is powered back on.)

I know of no mechanism that would turn the machine on from a power-off state. Are you sure your power device isn't getting wonky? Does it do it when plugged straight into the outlet (bypassing said device)?
