Can't get my Xbox 360 controller to work on my MacBook Pro. Stupidly didn't get a rec

When I plug in the controller the green light turns on for a second and then gos off. I have this driver and ControllerMate installed but it doesn't recognize the controller when its plugged in. I don't even think the controller is on.

Did I just waste a ton of money with no hope of getting it back? Please help. :(
