Hi, I am using a G4 Powerbook with power PC (not Intel) chip, running OS 10.5.8. I have removed the hard drive from an old Pismo G3 laptop that has died due to a totally spent battery. I know the drive works. I purchased one of those cheap USB to IDE/SATA adaptors in the hopes of being able to access files on the old Pismo drive on the G4. Everything I read on the internet told me that this was supposed to be plug & play, with no need for any driver, but it is not working out that way for me. The G4 is not recognizing the drive. I opened Disk Utility. The drive does not show up on the left side. Can anyone tell me how to get the drive recognized. Thanks in advance.

It should work. I have one of those adapters (not a cheap one though) and it works fine both ways. I would suspect the adapter or cable especially since you're sure the hard drive is OK. I'm assuming you tried other USB ports on your Powerbook and that they work OK with other USB devices?

It just occurred to me to ask.... is the adapter powered or is it USB powered? My adapter is powered. (AC)

I have rec'd one that was defective - new out of box - and not a cheap one.

Does your PB have USB 2 or is it one of the older USB 1 machines?
Not sure any of them will work if so.

All the ones I use are AC powered also.

It is USB powered only.

Well, that might be reason it's not working right. Your Powerbook may not be capable of providing enough current thru the adapter to the hard drive for it to spin up. Try using a dual USB cable instead. In other words, use two USB ports on the Powerbook at the same time. Most stores that sell computer accessories also sell dual USB power cables.
