My Macbook Pro eject button icon doesn't appear on the desktop when I press it. When I insert a DVD there are no sounds and nothing happens.

As you undoubtedly know already, pressing the eject button when there is no disk in the drive will produce the result you mention (no symbol on screen).

When you insert a DVD, I take it the grippers grab it and bring it fully into the machine? And then you have no whirring sound of the disc spinning up and nothing happens?

Is this a full-sized disc?

Is it a regular commercial DVD (like a movie) or a home-burned one?

Are you able to eject the disc normally (even though there is no symbol on screen)?

Tell us a little about what model MacBook Pro we're talking about as well.

The grippers do not grip the full size blank commercial DVD when I insert it. As I said there are no sounds and nothing happens. The DVD does not eject normally or when I try all the other ways suggested. My MBP is a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS 10.8.2
