Probably the best bet is to use something like HandBrake or MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to something iMovie can handle. This article seems to be a good description of the general process though it uses a different piece of conversion software.

You're welcome. Glad that helped. I have been using HandBrake regularly recently since the program I used to use is no longer supported. It can be a bit daunting at times and presents a boatload of potential options but works pretty well. .

Both NTSC and PAL support that aspect ratio if I recall correctly. The choice will depend mostly upon where you are going to be playing the video back. NTSC vs PAL - Difference and Comparison | Diffen
