• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

My friend has given me .vob files he has created. I have a legal copy of final cut pro. I need a ideally free program that will convert them to something final cut pro will edit.

Ideally it will only rip the video and I will save hard drive space.

You could use Handbrake to do this. I would provide the link to it but the site appears to be down at the moment. I did this some time ago using MPEG Streamclip . Here a link to the article describing the process I used.

I am not sure if MPEG Streamclip still needs the MPEG 2 Playback Component mentioned in the article. If you use Handbrake to convert the .vob files to something Final Cut can edit you won't need MPEG Streamclip but it's a good program to have around.
