I have an older Mac Mini and my OS X is 10.5.8. Because of the new threat from hacking, the patch released is for OS X 10.6. Is my operating system at risk and should I disable Java?

If you don't need it, then yes especially since you'll be running an older version. If however you need it, you'll have to keep it enabled. If that's the case, remaining smart online should be enough to protect you from 95% of the bad things online.

disabling java

Thanks for the input. As I'm not a techie, I have to admit I don't know if I need Java or not as I don't even know what it's used for. :-(

Do a simple test to see if you need it: disable it and go about your regular day. Odds are you don't need it so I can't imagine this being an issue. However, if you find that you need it, simply re-enable it.
