Hello, in removing Ubuntu 12.10 from my Mac as I was going to reinstall it, I appear to have accidentally gotten rid of my recovery partition. My Mac came with 10.6 and I have that disk, so is it really necessary to have one? How can I reinstall the recovery partition?

I'm assuming you were running either Lion or Mountain Lion at the time you removed Ubuntu? If you have a startup DVD or thumb drive of either one, then you don't need a recovery partition. And of course if you choose to go back to Snow Leopard, a recovery partition is not required.
