New External HD not recognized?

I just picked up a Seagate Plus (PC+Mac). I plugged it into my Macbook (OS X 10.6.8) USB and it's not recognized. It didn't come with any software, but the quick guide showed a Dashboard screen. What am I missing here?

Try launching Disk Utility and see if it shows up in there. You may just need to reformat it to HFS+. A quick Google search produced many how-to's. Here's one below...
