yesterday I could remove the battery easily and putting it back wasn't a problem either. I wanted to do a SMC reset. I read that there is a way to perform the reset with battery in place, but I still need to be able to replace the battery in due course....
It is mechanical problem and I may have to take a router and remove some material around the latches to be able to force them to retreat more completely. If there is a better suggestion, I would be delighted!

It does sound like the battery may have swelled and forced the latches off center or there might be some corrosion in the area. The router idea is OK as long as you are good with using it. Anyway, it's probably best to replace the battery as long as your Black Book is working OK.
You may be right re the battery. Under "About this Mac"/Diagnostics I find under "Battery Condition": "replace now"! This warning should not be hidden, but reported in capitals on start-up for instance.
Anyway, thanks for spending thoughts on me. Bye, Alexander
