Was this thumb drive used with the Mac? Was data on it recently deleted? If so, you need to empty the trash with the thumb drive pugged in to reclaim the space..

No, it's brand new. The trash has been empty the whole time. It is MS-DOS (Fat 32) - should it be formatted differently?

Open Disk Utility, select the Thmb Drive in the left coloumn, click on the first aid tab, then Erase and you should have 4 gb back.

As for Formatting, depends on what you are using it for. I have all my thumb drives Formatted Fat32, but if you are primarily using it on a Mac then Mac OS Extended (Journaled) wouldnt hurt.
