Wondering how I can reduce my CPU usage. There is approx. 50% CPU usage in my activities monitor and I have not opened any applications yet. I am running version 10.8.2. How can I go about streamlining my usage for background operations. This is beginning to rob valuable usage for rendering work etc.

Cheers

Thanks for the screenshot...but only 1.1% of the cpu useage is shown...so it's difficult to say where the cpu usage is coming from. Need to see ALL the process's.

You are showing my processes, try all processes to see if any global tasks are eating up the CPU

Great,

Thanks, I went to all processes and found the evil little bugger. Running in the root is "WDSmartWareD". This is using anywhere from 20 % to 100 % of CPU resources. I have clicked on quit, and it does but then magically reappears gobbling up valuable CPU resources. It would be related to my WD passport external hard drive. I have uninstalled all the software from Smart Ware but this part does not seem to disappear. I have googled many threads on this subject but no real concise solution. So if anyone out there has any idea how to remove this CPU hungry bugger it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
