iPhone5 connection to Macbook Pro

I would like to import my photos and videos made with my iPhone5 to my macBook Pro, but there's no automatic connection. IPhoto doesn't pop up. I've tried image capture, but there is no device recognized. What to do?

Have you tried using the USB connection and do you have iPhoto on your Mac?

Usb

Yes, I there is a USB connection and I have iPhoto. I've downloaded photos before from my iPhone, the first batch of pictures, and after that it just doesn't respond anymore.

What version of iPhoto are you using along with what OS on your Mac?
You may have to restart both your phone and iTunes.
