Since my most recent update, new tabs are opening up automatically when I click on a webpage link from the search engine results. It never used to do this. I have tried in vain to find the setting in preferences to stop this but without any luck.
I am using OSX 10.8.2

It should be in Safari>Preferences>Tabs and select 'Never' in the 'Open Pages in tabs instead of windows' option.

Thanks, sorted this problem!
The next question, how can I click on a link without it opening up a new page altogether? Again, this is something it never used to do before the update...

Select "Open links in new Tabs" instead of "new Window"

Look around in there. You might find other settings you'd like to change.

EDIT: It's actually "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" and apparently you want to select "Always". This is found in the Tabs, um tab, in Safari Preferences.
