So it seems I need to replace the battery in my machine, the only trouble is I'm having a hard time finding where I can purchase one. Does anyone know where I can find one for a reasonable price. I looked at NewerTech and they don't carry batteries for the unibody 17" MBP.....

The NewerTech battery for your model is available from OWC for $95.00. Here's the LINK.

Replacement batteries for the Unibody MBP's are not as easy to find as replacement batteries for non-Unibody MBP's.

Here's one place to purchase a new battery for a 17" 2009 Unibody MBP:

17" Unibody Early 2009 Parts - iFixit

It costs $149 + shipping + it needs to be installed. If you go directly to an Apple Store for a replacement battery for this computer...it will cost you $179...and this includes installation:

Apple - Support - Replacing the Battery in your MacBook (Models with built-in batteries)

You don't really save a whole lot of $$$ by buying the replacement battery yourself & do the install yourself. So it may be worth your while to pay the $179...and have Apple do it.

HTH,

- Nick

p.s. If you do the install yourself...you're also going to need a tri-wing screwdriver (not found in most screwdriver sets).

Sorry, I missed that but I see Nick answered your question. Just to add, in case you're wanting to do the work yourself, both Lowes and Home Depot sell the tri-wing screwdriver sets.
