Will I lose data when upgrading memory and operating system?

Hello,
When installing new operating system and memory will I lose pics, pdf's and music that is not backed up?I have never done this before. Need help.

Installing new memory modules would not normally impact any of your data, however, installing a new operating system certainly can. That's why we recommend making a backup. I personally recommend making two backups: One Time Machine, and the other a clone. (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) You will need two external hard drives or one large external partitioned in two.
