Dropped Powerbook - CD drive issues?

Hi all,

Just dropped my PB on a concrete surface :Shouting: It was still on when I picked it up but I shut it down immediately.

Took it to bits (for the 20th time) to make sure nothing was broken and all seemed OK. But now, when i try to start it back up, it seems to get stuck on the initial movement of the CD arm (the mechanical noise heard from before the screen jumps into life).

It's only just had a new logic board so I'm hoping someone can help me work out if this is worth trying to fix.

Does this sound right? Is there any way of booting it up without the CD drive?

Thanks in advance!

You'll be lucky with that one Mr.C :( You might have had a better chance if it hadn't been on but I think the stylus might be stuck on the platter which is most certainly fatal.
If you've turned it off in time I think you'll have to give it to a specialist to recover the data.

Needle?, Platter?... I know it's old but that makes it sound like a 1970's turntable!

I hope your not talking about the HD!! Is it not the CD drive that makes that mechanical "loading" type sound immediately after hitting the start button? I'm pretty sure that's where the noise is coming from.

Oh, sorry Pendlewitch, forgot to thank you for the response ;)

I decided to have another look (seeing as it's in bits on the living room floor getting in everyones way) and convinced myself the issues was with the CD drive. So I took it out.....

..... and i'm back in action! Seems these things dont need one to boot up.

It did make an ominous ticking sound (HD was my worry), but that seems to be smooth now.

Do I need to tell the kernal to stop searching for the optical drive?

Lol!! You're cheekier than me ! If it's got RPM in it's description then yes it is a 'platter' though I could have used the word 'head' instead of 'stylus' :D

I wouldn't know about telling the 'Colonel' anything. You dropped your PB on concrete..it's in bits and you've removed the CD drive. You're a very naughty boy.
