I note that I have 72Gb of storage files marked Other. Can any of these be deleted in order to gain space?

Some of it might. The problem however is that "other" is a rather nebulous category and can include quite a bit that you may or may not want/need.
If you're looking to clear up some space, start in your user directory and remove files you know you don't need (stay out of the Library folder though).
