BBC News - Sony to make last MiniDisc stereo system in March

To be honest I didn't know they still made them.

My old boss had a player, and before the iPod appeared they were the bees knees, but I guess knowbody wants to put an hour or twos music onto one disc anymore when we can put a substantial portion of our music collection onto one device

I must have still been into vinyl when those things came out.

I do not believe I have ever seen one of those discs anywhere except on a store shelf.

Sony's history of creating a format then dropping support is not new and they seem to be great at it.

Too many...
Say what you want, but those things were the most reliable music players ever made. I still have mine today from when it first came out. I don't want to get rid of it.

My mom's still got a betamax lying around somewhere! I found my old walkman recently, thought it was great when they first came out. happy memories of winding the tapes back on with a pencil :)

I bought one of these when i was working in Germany. I really thought they would take off and the more i went looking for them, the less i found of them.
Ended up exchanging it to someone for another weeks rent whilst i was in Denmark.
So yea not surprised that they are stopping them.

Mini-Disc was/is fantastic and the quality is superb. I used to really enjoy doing compilations and I've still got my Sharp MD Player/Recorder and a load of disks. It blows the socks of any MP3 player. I'd forgotten all about it since I went the iPod/iPhone route.

It's a shame really, a lot of DJ's used to use the format because it was rock solid. I'm going up in the loft to seek mine out tomorrow, I thinks it's in it's box next to that very expensive Panasonic DVD recorder/player with RAM Disk that I disconnected years ago when the Sky+HD and Blu-Ray Player boxes arrived :(

R.I.P.
