MacKeeper is a pretty ridiculous program so it digs itself deep into your OS. To uninstall it just follow this thread here: how to uninstall MacKeeper – updated « Phil Stokes

It gives step by step instructions and is easy to follow.

Good luck!

Also remember, google is extremely helpful for issues like these!

Thanks,

When I try to drag the mackeeper icon out of my applications folder into the trash, it drags ok, but doesn't actually go into the trash. It is still in the app folder. I only have the demo version of mackeeper. Is that different from the full (pay) version?

Update on uninstalling mackeeper: I accessed mackeeper from Finder and it DID go into the trash. Are you sure that's all I need to do? Is mackeeper somewhere else on my OS?

Hello. You're not going to get anywhere without answering the questions posed to you. You came here for advice, but are ignoring the advice you've gotten. Not gonna help.

Yes, I did follow that link, but when I opened my applications folder and dragged the mackeeper icon to the trash, it just went right back into the app folder. So I opened the application folder in finder and then it let me drag the mackeeper icon to the trash.

Did you download the Mackeeper uninstaller and run that? (link posted above)

When I click on that link, a screen comes up about uninstalling but it is not live.

Also, I no longer have a mackeeper icon, since I dragged it from finder into the trash.

Mackeeper can be difficult to remove. When you dragged it to the Trash did you see the uninstall window pop up asking for your password? If not have a read of this link advising on what must be removed to get rid of it.

When I dragged it to the trash, I didn't see the uninstall window pop up. I went to the link above you sent, and followed the instructions for manually uninstalling. After doing everything, including re-starting, my activity monitor still shows it there.

Not knowing what OS you are running, all i will say is to do a reinstall of the OS.
In 10.5 &10.6 you will need to do a Archive and Install, and if you have a later OS, like 10.7 or 10.8 then it by default does the Archive and Install for you.
This in my opinion, IS THE ONLY WAY to rid yourself of that evil code for ever.

Cheers

Onyx is great and used by most users here.

He is talking about MacKeeper. It's messed up more Macs than I can count.

Are you saying that onyX is a nightmare?

No CarolynR... Onyx is entirely the opposite..Dennis agrees and I'm not arguing with the maestro :)
