I have some old Word 5.1a (for Mac) files that make essential use of the Equation Editor of Word 5.1. I've found some work-arounds to open these files in Open Office and even in Word 200X, but can't access the Equation Editor to edit, or even to WYSIWYG them. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running OS 10.7.5. Thanks for any advice... Paul Kay

The Windows Office suite has filters which include Word 5.1 for the Mac. If you know someone who has Office 2003, 2007, or 2010, they can open and convert the files for you. (They must have the filter installed, however.)

Hey, thanks for replying! I work strictly on Mac. If I find someone using Windows who can convert the files for me, will the converted files work on Mac, or will I have to edit them on a Windows machine?

Once they're converted to *.doc or *.docx in Windows, they can be ported to the Mac without difficulty. I routinely exchange documents between Office 2010 for Windows and Office 2011 for the Mac.
