Is there a WD or Seagate 1+TB that doesn't need an external power source?

Do WD or Seagate (or any one for that matter) make a 1TB+ external drive that uses Firewire, but that DOES NOT need to be plugged in? I live off the grid, using solar, so to use the computer and only have ONE appliance plugged in seems easier. is this possible?

Thanks,

So, I need an adapter to convert the Thunderbolt to FW800? Does Seagate make a 2TB unit that is similar?

Not sure. You can probably find that out by visiting seagate's website or doing some searches on Google or just browsing on other websites that sell hard drives.

I have several freeagent goflex drives from Seagate. They do not need external power.

They come by default with USB 3.0 - but you can get a firewire cable or thunderbolt adapter. I have both - IMHO the drive isn't fast enough to saturate firewire so it isn't worth the money to get a thunderbolt adapter and cable.

(You still need to buy a $50-$60USD cable on top of this adapter to use thunderbolt)
