deleted mail messages reappear

I just got a new iPhone5 to go with my macbook pro and my iPad2

I don't know how it happened, but somehow when I delete a message on any device, it disappears at the time, but then comes back when I later reopen the mail application on any or all of the machines..

I must have an iCloud setting wrong, but cannot figure it out.

Can anyone help me?

Mail >Preferences > Accounts> Mailbox Behavior > Trash then select the options you want.

Is your mail provider POP or IMAP?
