I want to sync ical on my iPad (original) and iPhone 4s with my 2004 iMac, (not upgraded OS)
The USB on the iMac is a 1.1 (upgrade is basically buy a new iMac I've been told) so I can't sync through the USB. Bluetooth won't work.
iCloud also seems to be unhelpful.

Is there any other way to sync? Am I missing something?

Your iMac is too old. In order to use it to sync with iCloud you must be running Mountain Lion which you can not do on your iMac. See the following Apple KB article: LINK

Short answer: no.

(it's technically achievable with some software, but the results will be VERY unsatisfactory)

Screens are cheap as chips these days and a 2004 iMac's will be very poor by comparison with a decent-quality screen. Go to an Apple dealer and see for yourself, the technology is quite amazing now.
