Many thanks to you guys that pointed me in the right direction.
I downloaded software 'Simply Burn'
Selected slideshow in Aperture and once created, including selected music from iTunes, saved it as a slideshow for computers in iTunes.
Opening the Burn software I dragged the slideshow icon on my desktop to the burn folder.
This asked me if I wanted to convert to mpeg,
which I did.
Once the DVD was finished I was able to play it on my Panasonic TV.
It was fine but not so clearly defined as if I was able to get my iDVD to work.
