My cursor is too big and changes to some unknown symbol when I move it about. The advice usually seems to be to go to System Preferences/Universal Access . I don't have that in OS 10.8.2.
Others say go to mouse, and move the slider . there is no slider.
Any different suggestions will be welcome.

That's because the name in OS 10.8.x was changed to "Accessibility"!:)

Check all your settings there...something may have been changed accidentially.

I have been there and looked ; but the only thing I can change is the scrolling speed.

System Preferences, Accessibility. Highlight the "Display" icon on the left side of the box. Now turn down your cursor size to "normal". All done.
