Problems After Upgrading Ram

Hi. I have a 24" iMac early 2008 running OSX 10.8.2.

Its been running really slow over the last few months, but has been stable apart from that. I decided to increase the RAM from 2gb to 4gb and bought a matching pair of RAM sticks from Mr Memory in the UK.

I've installed the sticks and the 4gb is being recognised. However, several times during the day the machine is now restarting due to a serious error. The only thing that's changed is the RAM.

I've run a test on the RAM using Rember and it says that the RAM is passing all the tests. This is the problem report I get - can anyone help?

Thanks.

Installing bad/defective ram or incorrect ram is probably the most common reason for kernel panics in Mac's.

The new ram installed (one or both sticks) is either defective in some way...or the wrong ram altogether. This can be easily proven by reinstalling the old ram...and hopefully having no issues.

I would normally suspect the RAM first - in this case I would try uninstalling Sophos and see if the problem goes away.

You should have a 'Sophos Remove' in your Applications folder if this is the free home version.

I agree with both definitely remove the AV and re-install your old ram .
For what its worth the Crucial ram selector works and I have never got a bad ram from them.

Get rid of Sophos. Take a look at this:

last loaded kext at 4930619038665: com.sophos.kext.sav 8.0.4 (addr 0xffffff7f89edc000, size 24576)
last unloaded kext at 4926121951188: com.sophos.kext.sav 8.0.4 (addr 0xffffff7f89ed7000, size 20480)
loaded kexts:
com.sophos.kext.sav 8.0.4

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: installer

The memory modules are probably OK, but I would do as suggest above anyway to make sure.

If the "serious error restarts" happens/happened with both the old ram AND the new ram...then it probably isn't the ram.

As bobtomay & chscag recommended...try getting rid of the Sophos.
