I have a mid 2010 27" iMac ( 2.8GHz Intel Core i5, 27-inch (2560 x 1440) and need a new 2nd display, my old Apple Cinema Display (‪23-inch DVI‬ (1920 x 1200) finally having died.

I'm not able to spend the $$$$ right now to buy a new Apple display and would like some recommendations on compatible, non-Apple displays in the under $400 range. I'm a photographer so quality is important.

Any display will be compatible with the right adaptor, so choose a monitor and then come back for advice on an adaptor

Thanks very much.
I've talked to Samsung and they are saying that it's resolution-compatibility that's important--but they admit to knowing nothing what so ever about Macs. ( even asked if my iMac is an Apple product).

Fixed that for you. ;D

IF you want to stay inexpensive, yet get a decent monitor for the price, take a look at Dell's monitors.
Whatever you look at, get one with a DVI-D or displayport connection.
Then you'll need either a mini displayport (mdp) to DVI-D adapter and DVI-D cable or mdp to displayport cable.

Connections are not a problem - I still prefer DVI-D; probably just because I've got those cables filling up a couple of drawers - but it'll give you an all digital signal and easy to set proper resolutions.
