When I was running Leopard, I used to be able to change the format of the date and time on the menu bar, but I seemed to have lost that functionality with Mountain Lion. Does anyone know how I can go about reformatting the Menu Bar date and time?

Currently, my menu bar reads:

Wed Jan 2 12:18 PM

I would like it to be in the Full format such as:

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 - 12:18 PM

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dear Sean

Go into Preferences>Date and Time and from there you can choose "Date & Time", "Time Zone", "Clock". From each of these headings, you can choose exactly how you want your date, time etc displayed. You can even choose "automatic" in most categories which means your Mac will change the date & time according to the season.

You have complete control.

Ian,
Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the Date and Time section under preferences, but I must be missing how to change how the format of them...

I found under Preferences > Language & Text > Region > Customize that you can customize various date and time formats. For example, the date has Short, Medium, Long, and Full versions.

What I can't figure out is how to display the Full version in the Menu Bar...

Any ideas?

That's one thing I changed in all previous versions. I have not found a way to change the format in the menu bar in ML.

Tried all the same changes as used prior, they do nothing.

Instead of International settings in previous versions, the settings are in Language and Text - Region.
But again, nothing I've tried has worked and I haven't found anything on the web either.

If you want full control of the clock consider istats menu. The latest version is quite good too. $16 USD
iStat Menus, a Mac app by Bjango
It will give you full control of the date/time - and I love having all my stats right there in the menu bar.

(Yes it would be better if this were adjustable in OSX directly without having to pay)

Thanks, I'm currently using the demo version of iStats. Maybe it's time to splurge for the full version.

Incorrect date format

I too am having issues with the date format in Mountain Lion. I set the region as Finland / English. The sample date format shows the correct format: DD/MM/YYYY. However, all my applications (MS Office, Notebook etc) stubbornly insist on using the US date format.

Any suggestions?

Those would be specific to the application themselves. Thus, you'll need to ensure the proper format in the applications that you use.

I've looked, but can't find any way to modify the date format in these apps. So I can only assume that they are taking the info from the system. Make sense?

In Word, go to Insert > Date and Time. Select the appropriate format and press the "Default..." button.

The short date is always expressed MM/DD/YYYY.

I have no option to change it :-(
