I plugged my new ipad mini into itunes to sync for the first time, but when I press "sync" it says "preparing to sync" but then it says "waiting for changes to be applied", then the sync process stops before anything has happened. I can't figure out what "changes" it is waiting for. I am able to sync over Wifi directly from the ipad mini, but want to be able to do it from my laptop as well as my wifi connection isn't reliable.

And, btw, what the heck happened to used-to-be-awesome Apple tech support??? I just spent 2 hours in the phone to no avail with customer support who seemed like he knew next to nothing about Apple products (at one point he told me to "right click" even though he knew I was on my Macbook Pro, and that was a supervisor!) and was obviously just looking things up in manuals. They used to be the real deal there, tech people, and if they didn't know, they'd transfer to a specialist, now even the 2nd level people suck. This is the 2rd really bad customer service experience I've had at Apple in the past few weeks, when I never had one in the 15 years prior.

Sorry to vent, very frustrated with tech support right now, thanks to anyone who might know what "changes" itunes is waiting for.

I think sometimes with apple care you might run into a few employees who are fresh from training. I've only experienced that once but otherwise I've been extremely satisfied with apple care support. Trust me you would appreciate apple care a lot more even with your experience after being helped by lexmarks so called tech specialists. I was on the phone for over 2 hours and they still were unable to fix my printer. So apple care does not seem to be that bad. I'm sure next time you call you probably wont encounter that problem again... lets hope! :)

I hope it's just new people - but it wasn't just this one. I've called 3 times in the last month and every one was frustrating - it used to be like calling real tech people. This guy even admitted he was looking through manuals and didn't really know why he was asking me to do the things we were doing! Was on the phone for hours and still isn't solved. I know the other companies suck worse, but it's sad because I feel like it's one more thing that's gone downhill.

Any ideas what the message "waiting for changes to be applied" means? I really don't know who to ask now, as Apple Care was useless. Thanks for replying!

If you have already synced the mini via wifi and then go to sync it again while connected, there likely are not any changes to be made... hence, once it verifies what you are syncing and what is on your mini are already the same... it stops.

No, we ended up syncing it through wifi after an hour and a half because the Apple guy was unable to figure out why it wouldn't sync in iTunes. I feel like it's probably something silly like I have something checked wrong or set wrong, not sure, but all the Apple guy did was make me reset all my devices to factory settings, reload, etc, etc. Nothing worked, and I finally hung up on him when he started re-asking me the same questions I had already answered in the first 5 minutes of the call (i.e. what version of iTunes are you using?) and it became all too obvious he was just guessing and hadn't a clue.

Did you try a different USB port or cable ?
When connected via USB does it show up in devices in iTunes and does the info look correct?
What computer is this make ,model and year and have you rebooted ?
What OS?
Do the USB ports act ok for other devices?

No, I didn't try a different cable. It definitely recognizes my iPad, and the iPad summary shows up, with the "sync" button under it, but when I press sync it says "preparing to sync" then goes to "waiting for changes to be applied" and the sync process just stops there. I have no problem syncing my iPod Touch 5th generation via the USB port. It's a Macbook Pro, 2 years old, I'm not home to look up the OS and I can't remember what it is, but it's the same OS that was on there when I bought it. But again, no problem with new iPod 5th, so I'd imagine if the OS were too old, that wouldn't sync either? I did not try rebooting, will try that when I get home.
