MacBook Pro restarts randomly

Hi - please please help me find a solution

I have a 2010 macbook pro. Before Mountain Lion, My computer crashed once or twice. When I downloaded mountain lion, it randomly restarted more frequently.

I can run basic word processing and safari, but anything more causes it to restart randomly and show a gray screen that says " your computer has restarted due to a problem"

I took it to the apple store, and their hardware diagnostic test came back fine. The genius said that there was an issue because of mountain lion and that it did not download properly.

He told me to back up my computer, wipe it, reinstall Mountain Lion, and restore my computer from the hard drive. Apple backed up my computer, wiped it, reinstalled mountain lion - then I restored my computer from the hard drive.

I have no idea what to do next. This computer is only 2 years old and I have no extra money for a new computer. THe test said the hard drive was fine, he said something about a critical file and it hanging on protocol or something idk what that means.

It has something to do with your Nvidia drivers, You are not alone . I have seen several other articles describing this exact error and have not seen a definite fix for it. Apple will suggest to do a clean install of the OS X .
How ever I have been wondering if maybe the fans and heat sinks are plugged up with dust and debris from a couple years of use. Some pple who have a MacBook pro with 2 graphics cards have had luck by turning off graphics switching.
Scince I see the NVRM in the panic you could try to reset the NV Ram by holding down Option+Cmnd+P+R at startup and hold them down through 3 chimes then release the buttons . Its worth a shot .

Try restarting your MBP in safe mode and run it that way for awhile to see if it goes into kernel panic. If it's a hardware problem, it will go into kernel panic even in safe mode. Restart your machine and hold down the shift key as soon as you hear the startup sound. Continue holding it until you see the Apple appear. Safe mode removes all startup items and third party drivers. It also disables the sound. Let us know.

I just tried the resetting of the video card. Started up at 12:22 AM, let's see how long before it crashes, it if does. When it crashes, I will start it up in safe mode and see if it panics there.

At 12:45 PM it restarted again, despite resetting the graphics card with the step you said above

Now I am in safe mode, and we will see if it crashes. urgh. 12:49 AM now.

In safe mode, but im not sure how to get it to crash, im opening all the applications i can and trying to youtube and just finger swipes and stuff. If it does or doesn't crash, what does that mean? ugh. this is a nightmare.

Run it in safe mode for awhile like I said above. Maybe for about two or three hours. If it doesn't restart or kernel panic in safe mode, then it's likely you have a driver or some software that's causing the restarts.

Normally, if the nVidia graphics chipset is acting up it will do so both in normal and safe mode.

Merry Christmas all, chscag I think I've seen something similar to this recently.

One of the proposed solutions was to trash the com.apple.windowserver.plist in Library/Preferences and also the com.apple.windowserver.OE35739 etc or whatever xxxxxxxxxxx.plist in Library/Prefs/By Host

It seemed to work for a few.

And a Merry Christmas to you too. Thanks for posting that but we'll have to wait until the OP replies back to see if the KPs are happening even while in safe mode. However, that's an interesting solution, one that I was not aware of.

I was searching for weeks and finally came across and article that mentioned how these random restarts are a glitch in mid-2010 Macbooks that Apple will replace free of charge. Being that I had already tried every logical other alternative out there with no success, I went into the the Apple store (for a second time, the first, they were clueless), showed them the article and they were like "oh yeah" must be the glitch.

Replaced my logic board for free. Issue has not occurred since. Happy days! Apple evidently didn't want to make the glitch knowledge readily available because they thought too many people would claim the fix. I think that's pretty shady, but I'm happy my computer finally works correctly.

Can't find it now for some reason. Will keep looking. You don't need to reference the article though most likely, the genius I dealt with was fully aware of the problem with mid 2010 macbook pros. He ran one test to confirm that was the issues and that was that...
