Trouble emailing open Word documents

While on my iMac (running OS X, version 10.8.2) I am only recently unable to email open Word documents.

Previously, when I wanted to send a Word document that I had finished and which I still had open, I would go to File on the menu and select "Send to" at the bottom of the drop down menu, and then choose "Mail recipient (as attachment)"

The Apple mail service would open, with a message ready to go with the Word file attached.
I would address the message, write a note and hit send. I like this method because I work with multiple versions of documents and I like being 100% certain that I am emailing the correct document.

A couple of weeks ago, this stopped working.

When I choose "Mail recipient (as attachment)", the spinning wheel icon spins and spins, but my email never opens. I have had to force quit Word a few times in order to proceed.

I use Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac, version 12.3.5.
