I've been looking for a while for a way to disable the dividing line on the dock - so I can put folders above it, and applications below it.

The real reason for this is so I can place a .jar above it, mixed in with my other applications. Does anybody know a way?

Which version of OS X are you running? The dock in Lion and Mountain Lion can not be modified. If you're running Snow Leopard or Leopard, there are several apps that can apply modifications to the dock. However, I don't remember seeing anything that can remove the dividing line or give a second row of folders.

I'm assuming the OP has the Dock on the side of the screen. I don't think it's possible to put apps on the folders side or folders on the apps side, whether the Dock is on the side or on the bottom.

How about adding another spacer or two so you can group certain things into groups, if that is what your looking for.
As in my screenshot.

This is a command that will put another spacer within the dock. You can then drag the spacer to where you like or drag it off to a "poof" if you don't like it
Open Terminal and copy and paste

Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

return

type

killall Dock
