I have recently purchased a power mac G5 and I want to do a clean install of operating system

the computer as 3 gb ram dual 2.3 ghz its the model with the 8 slots for ram

what I would like to know is what is the most up to date system I can install

The latest version any PPC Mac can run is Leopard, OS X 10.5.

Retail copies of 10.5 Leopard go for over $100 on eBay and other sites..starting with 10.6 Snow Leopard, Apple drastically dropped the price to $29.99 for Snow Leopard and $19.99 for Lion and Mountain Lion..

But as Bobtomay said, you can't run anything beyond Leopard and frankly, purchasing a PowerPC based Mac now is not really a wise decision for the future since you're going to fall farther behind with OS updates and applications will begin to demand at least 10.6 Snow Leopard to operate..

A lot of people are already finding that the latest version of Flash no longer supports Leopard..

How will that manifest itself? Just slower loading or failure?

The end result is a failure to be able to see a particular video of Flash content you are trying to access because the site demands that you need to be running a particular (usually newer) version of Flash to access the content. This version of Flash is only available for newer version of OS X, so you just get a failure box indicating that you need to upgrade Flash before you can proceed..

Content creators aren't worrying about providing support for older versions for those that are stuck for reasons beyond their control..

I have to wonder how much of that is due to functionality or due to developer whims. In Flash Builder, I can easily set the minimum version of Flash needed (it defaults to 11.1) but I imagine that some developers change that value with little consideration of whether or not it's necessary. Who knows though.

We've already had several posts with folks not being able to access Flash videos because they can't install Flash 11 in 10.5.

There is a post somewhere around here though that has a link for a flash hack to make them think you have v. 11.
Think it was 'flash for ppc macs'.

Basically: Either sell it on again, or install a PowerPC version of some popular flavour of Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, etc.)... That's the only way its usefulness is gonna have any major longevity...
