I feel like an idiot...I just unpacked the new MacBook Pro 13" and it came with two power cables...one the usual charging one and the other with a three prong plug and an odd connector on the other end...kid at Mac store said it was just to extend length of charging cable...that is clearly not correct...so what is it?

The kid at the store was correct. It's an extension cord. You see where the plug is on the white power brick? You can pull it off and attach the three-prong plug to it to make it longer.

"Kid at the store" was basically correct. You use the "stubby" 3-prong connector when you do not need 12 feet of cord. If you use the "stubby" device…you then have approx. 6 feet of cord & the power brick…with less "spaghetti" and bulk to deal with.:)

Ring 'the kid' and thank him for his courtesy.
