Hello:
1st time poster, just beginning development w/Mac (OSX LION) tools.
Briefly, I was windows developer/coder/engineer for 18 years, had my own shop for that time... made a living, and retirement on (apologies to the world...), windows. Shut down about 7 years ago. Got my first Mac about 8 months ago, as I realized now... as a user, well... Windows sucked. Investigated Mac (OSX), primarily for security issues, took the plunge. I had backround using NEXTSTEP tools in the early days, which is what suggested to me, to take a look at this stuff.
I have, currently, only rudimentary knowledge of low level POSIX "stuff".
Live in Albuquerue, 57 yrs old a very fit, life is gooood.
Ok, that's my one and only intro.
...
I am in process of choosing tools, to build a web site... highly technical. The game has 2 do with Kirtland Air Force Base here, which has "dropped" 24m gallons of Jet Fuel into our Aquifer. Nobody's talking about it, nobody want to know about it, and it threatens our future here, in very real ways.
This project, then... is a web site, to communicate all the particulars of this to the public.
Myself and a few others, have done a lot: amassed comprehensive data, can model this spill over time, predict it's "growth" in the future, know available remediation (cleanup) technologies, and those needing more research... now. Hired some exceptional 3-d scientific modelling folks, much of that work is close to being done in Java. Timelines, everything.
So... now, I'm investigating tools, for the "big build". Willing to put in time burning midnight oil, to do this well.
Looking (playing) with Ruby/RoR/Redmine (CMS). Trying to determine if tools in XCODE and AQUA would be a better choice. Just getting going on, that.
Suggestions, comments appreciated.
Q: I'm downlowding upgrade (for x'th time in last 24 hrs) to XCODE. There is no meter on my machine (that I'm aware), of % of download completed. I've looked in my \usr\(me)\download directory, don't see the file. I haven't been in one place long enough, to complete download (it's 1.5gb). So...
- where is partial download stored?
- is download incremental (does it resume, from previous incomplete state)?
...
Lastly, technology has changed (improved) so much, since I hung up my spurs 7 yrs ago. Browser development, then, was just beginning in meaningful way. Sooo much more. I'm well caught up, but not completely. FWIW, our shop's production code, for years, was done in DELPHI. Looking at that product now, toooo many limitations to use it for this.
Thanks in advance.
