We recently obtained a 2000 imac that has had 2 previous owners. Unfortunately the OS disc is not with the computer. We are able to log in, but we cant make any changes due to admin passwords. Any ideas on how we correct this?

If it's truly a 2000 iMac, it came pre-installed with OS 9.0.4. The maximum OS that can be installed would be OS X 10.3.9 or maybe 10.4.11 depending on its speed and amount of memory.

In any event, this machine is obsolete and finding a disk for it to be able to reset the password is going to be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. You may be able to find a disk for it on eBay. Be advised though that you will need a retail version of the OS and not one specific for the model.

There may be other ways to reset the password though. I'm not familiar with classic Macs, so perhaps one of our other members who is can be of more assistance.

:D Lot's of difference between a 2000 and 2008 machine. OK, let's start over...

Your iMac originally shipped with Leopard 10.5.2. However, trying to procure a new Leopard disk (retail version) will be very expensive. (around $100) Therefore, we recommend going to the Apple on line store and buying a copy of Snow Leopard retail = 10.6.8 and use it to reset your iMac. The DVD will cost $19.99 plus some local tax.

I recommend using it to erase the drive and start over fresh. Install Snow Leopard and setup your own user account and password. But you don't have to do that if you just want to reset the password.
