Provide some more info on your Mac. Also tell how much space is left on your HD.
A great app is OnyX. It is all you will ever need in terms of "cleaning". Avoid MacKeeper and other apps like it.

Is your iMac just slower or are you experiencing other issues as well?
I'd download OnyX, and under the Automation tab, check off everything under "maintenance" and "cleaning" and just let it run.

I agree with CrisMan287. Run OnyX first to see if this helps.
