I was hoping someone had an answer.

Why not just tell us what model Macintosh you have (exact model)? Then we can verify/confirm if it can be upgraded to OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

If it can…we can suggest some solutions…and ask further questions if necessary.:)

You can install Lion OS X.7 on your MBP. Suggest you beef up the memory from 1GB.

When I put the dvd in immediately kicks it back out. I have tried bootie off of it, and that does not work.

I have done the command option p & r and that did not help.

I have held the option down at start and when it asked for hard drive I put in the dvd, and it rejected it.

The dvd seems to work ok with another dvd that I put in it, loaded normally.

This is a issue with the disk not being readable. I have seen this before of the 2006 2007 mbpro's
The super drive lens is dirty . Some disks will read fine while others will not.
If the super drive fails to read or mount the disk it will spit it back out.
I am assuming the disk is new and clean??
I have taken the super drives out and taken them apart , then using a q-tip and some alchohol cleand the lens and they worked fine then.

It says mine is upgradeable to snow leopard, but it spits my disc right back out. I have tried other dvd and they all worked, but not my new dvd for snow leopard.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the info on your computer. Yes it definitely can run at least OS 10.6 (up to 10.7 as Harryb2448 mentioned).

Just to be sure…is this a retail Snow Leopard install DVD with a picture of a Snow Leopard on it? If so…is it damaged in any way (scratches, etc.)? Did you buy this disk new or used?

Thanks,

- Nick

When you reboot the computer…insert the Snow Leopard disk…and hold down the "c" key. The tells the computer to boot from the DVD.

Nick, I did that, and it spits it right back out.

Dawson1112, thought the cleans on the dvd reader might be dirty. It did read some disks, but not the apple disks.

The dirty optical drive idea made above is a good suggestion…but the fact that the optical drive reads all other disks fine…and not the Snow Leopard disk…makes things confusing & inconsistent. Maybe there's something wrong with the disk…even if it is new & came from the Apple Store.

I had thought of both of those options.

Not sure which way to go now.

I don't have a cleaner, that would be a quick local fix. Getting a new dvd or having this one checked out is more difficult as we are leaving for AZ next week.

Do you know of anyone else with an older Macintosh computer (capable of booting a Snow Leopard disk)? If so…you could see if their computer can boot it.

For a cleaner - after you shut down your Mac - take a can of air and shoot 3-4 quick bursts into the slot in different directions.

You say it reads some discs. Does it read other DVDs or CDs only? Often when the optical drive is failing it will handle CDs, however DVDs will not read.
