Apple TV Home Sharing issue with PC and/ or Norton

I love my apple tv. I bought it this past summer and use it for Netflix and also playing my itunes music thru my stereo. Recently, I had to upgrade my home pc. I went from Vista to Windows 7 and also went from using AVG anti virus to Norton Internet Security 2013. My apple tv worked fine on Vista and AVG. Now it can stream Netflix without any issues but it will not allow me to see my itunes music. It says I need to turn on home sharing- which I did. I am not sure if this is a Norton problem, a Windows 7 problem, an apple tv problem or a combination. My itunes says home sharing is on. Can anyone help? I tried to contact Norton about it but they said it is an apple issue.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forums . . . .

I for one would start to Uninstall Norton and see what happens. AV can cause problems like that.

What .v of iTunes do you have ?? I wouldnt think it being a ATV problem as it worked before. You have something somewhere in the new setup stopping the HomeSharing be seen.
Make sure your ATV is the latest iOS as well.

Cheers

Itunes version 11.0.0.163

I would really like to keep Norton on the computer if possible. AVG let some virus in that ruined my last computer's hard drive. Do you have any suggestions?

Thx

Do as my mate suggests. If you must run AV software use ClamXAV on your Mac and Microsoft Security Essentials on the PC, both freeware.

You can ALWAYS put norton back on if its found that that wasnt the problem. You need to fault find and that means trying one thing at a time.
Because you are using Windows and i havnt for quite a few years someone else could pop in with some suggestions. But as i said, take it off then put back on,

It is not a matter of it being "easier". It is a matter of removing an AV being the first step of troubleshooting many network issues including this one. It is the first thing that needs to be either ruled out or verified that it is the culprit.

At this point we don't even know "for sure" that Norton is the problem.

If you are unwilling to remove it long enough to even test to verify it is the culprit or not and to get homesharing working prior to installing an AV, then...

And the circle of tech support - with Norton - Ever since Norton sold the company to Symantec, they have been another AOL when it comes to calling them for tech support - The problem is always some other software, never theirs. If you can test and it does work until Norton is installed, then it becomes a Norton issue or a setting within Norton when you call them and not an Apple one.

I would also add, if you believe "paying" for some AV is somehow giving you better protection - mistake. Believe I can safely state, none of the major techies on this forum use Norton on their windows machines, nor would even recommend Norton. I am with Tattooed - use MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials instead of Norton.

I was typing all that during those last couple of posts - I believe you can redownload Amazon purchases by going into your account.
This is one of the big advantages Amazon offers pertaining to purchasing software through them.

See if you can - click on "Your Account" on the home page of Amazon - by the cart button - then select "Your Games and Software Library".

edit:
If it is still not working after removing Norton, let's get your AppleTV/homesharing up and working prior to reinstalling it.

Try these one at a time

Try restarting the Apple TV.

Go into the AppleTV and remove the old home share and set it up again.

Is the Win machine awake? That is you need to turn off the computer going to sleep.

Have you maxed out the number of authorized computers?

Check the post by tartantoon in this thread.

I'm having the same problem! =(

Also, I can't figure out how to turn on homesharing for photos once I finally do get homesharing to work (assuming I will eventually...).
