Now with iCloud, is there any reason that you need to backup apps from your iPhone/iPad to your computer? I have a 4 year old Macbook that only has a 160GB hard drive and space is limited. I am hoping to create space by deleting my iPhone/iPad apps from my computer.

Thank you.

You can backup to the cloud only if you wish, but the simpler solution would be to replace the 160 GB drive with a larger one. New hard drives are inexpensive and changing one out in a MacBook is easy.

I will second chscag 's suggestion and redundant backup because you never know when a drive or internet access will fail.

Moreoever, you only have a limited amount of space in iCloud ... 5GB I think it is?
