How much difference in overall speed and performance would a 2012 13" MBP give me over my current mid 2009 MBP? Big advantage overall?

For an exact answer…please specify the models you're concerned about. Your current 2009 MBP specs (cpu speed) are not in your profile…so we don't even have a starting point (there are at least two models that fit the "2009 13" MBP" category).

Currently 2.26 core2duo. Looking at the mid 2012 i5 or i7.

But basically compared to your 2009 MBP (2 cores)…a 2012 model (i5, 2 cores) will have at least 2x the cpu performance (which is a lot)!!! (even more with the i7 cpu)…and probably far better graphics performance.

That did it Nick. Between your input, and a stellar review on Amazon, I went for a refurb through Apple at a very good price. Thanks for your help.

Wow…congratulations on the purchase!:) I didn't realize you were that close to making a buying decision. It's certainly going to be a lot faster/snappier than your 2009 MBP.:)
