They are SEXY! Saw one this morning, bright and early. Holy cow is the 21.5" light! It really is a beautiful thing to behold. I know there are tons of naysayers who are just bitter about losing the DVD combo (get over it. fast) but hey.. their loss! I can't wait to see the 27"'s!

A Japanese site has the first teardown of the slim iMacs and turns out that the RAM on the 21.5" is actually socketed DIMMs that can be replaced if you open the iMac. The 27" iMac apparently has a small access panel to get to those DIMMs..

Link? I'm very curious to know how difficult the tear down is on that sucker!

The problem, however, is that there are only 2 slots for memory modules instead of the 4 that are on the older 21.5" models. Which means unless you want to open that baby up and do the upgrade yourself, you're pretty much limited to what Apple offers as an option. Wonder how much 16 GB modules are going for? :$

I thought they were soldered down? Or that's what I have been hearing people complain about.

No, the teardown shows they're slotted not soldered in. However, only two slots are available.

That's a pretty poor tear down. Shots are way too small to see what's going on in there.

The tear down is kind of shoddy, but the narrative spells out the memory problem fairly well. It's also interesting to note that the machine only has one fan instead of the three fans used in previous models. Should be quieter than the older models.

Since the iMac is shipping now I imagine that ifixit and others will have better teardowns soon..

Hard to believe those can compete with the 2011 iMacs in terms of performance - in such a slim line form factor. Amazing. Look forward to seeing benchmarks on these.

I went to the Apple store today to pick up some stuff for the Holidays. :p I was surprised cause there was one 21.5" iMac that one of the staff brought in for display. There was quite a few people hovering around it. I didn't get to touch it but it does look pretty awesome.

It's a little on the small side for me, so I'm definitely going for the 27".

I'm glad that the memory is user replaceable. I'm going to get the fusion drive and do the RAM install later. All of my Macs so far have been doing fine on 4GB of RAM.

The 27" is nice, but I hate that it's only thinner around the edges. It's still FAT around the center! What's the point of that, besides tricking people? So stupid imo.

Sounds like some friends of mine who've been on a diet for years. Always difficult to remove that fat around the center! ;P
