Hi guys,

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to Mac hardware, but here's my question.

My brother has a 21" iMac circa 2007 and we have two old monitors - Acer 15" with max res 1028*768

Now I know these monitors are ugly as sin! But my bro just needs to extend his monitor space, maybe have email on one screen and browser on the other.

My question is - can you attach two monitors and have them at a different resolution to your iMac monitor????

The iMac would be 1920x1080 and the two monitors (VGA) would be set at 1028x768 (i think)

Finally if someone has a link to a cable that can do this, i would be eternally grateful!

Thanks!

Would be helpful for those that are able to assist in knowing which iMac he has.

You have 21" in title and 27" in the post. Both of those sizes were first introduced in late 2009.
Prior to that were 20" and 24" iMacs.
Prior to those were 17", etc.

You can click on the Apple and go to About This Mac for info on the machine.
Providing accurate monitor size, CPU and video card would assist in narrowing down the specific iMac you have.

Also:

What version of OS X is on the machine?

and

You would also need to advise what sort of connections are available on those Acer monitors - VGA, DVI???

If you are not familiar with the names of ports when you look at them, you can compare them to pics in post # 4 in the following thread:

oops sorry I edited there - i'm not 100% sure what he has, it's definitely around 20", I dont think its a big as 24".

The two monitors are VGA. But i was thinking of a mini-display port to two Dvi cable

then I can buy two adapters to convert the DVI to vga.

I want to future proof his setup in case he buys two better monitors in future!!

thanks

You definitely do not want to use multiple adapters unless that is the "only" option.

You still need to verify what ports are on the iMac.

A 2007 iMac would have mini-DVI.
Mini displayport began with the early 2009 iMac.
Earlier PPC iMacs used mini-VGA.

ohh wow - didnt know that.

I'll get him to find out which model he has - is there a serial number or code somewhere that would tell him.

Ohhh and he as mountain lion installed
