I work for a charity and one of our offices had a Mac Pro which was just sat there gathering dust because nobody knew how to use it and they didn't need it. We've now had it moved to our office where I'm trying to get it all updated and set-up.

I've managed to reset the administrator password even though the OSX DVD is lost and have found that it's running quite an old version of OSX, 10.5.8.

Does anyone know what the latest version of OSX this Mac could run?

It's a Mac Pro 3,1
One Quad Core 2.8Ghz Intel Xeon
4GB RAM (I'll probably upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB possibly 16GB depending on price)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB
320GB SATA Drive (plus 2 additional drives)
16x Superdive

It can run the most current Mac OS (10.8.2). To do this you need to:

- Purchase an OS 10.6 install disk from the Apple Store
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (UK)
- Install Snow Leopard.
- Make sure Snow Leopard is at least version 10.6.6 so you have access to the Mac App Store.
- Purchase & download OS 10.8 from the Mac App Store.

That is, update via Software Update if the disc is older than 10.6.6

I'm not 100% sure exactly what version the Snow Leopard disks are that the Apple Stores are selling (just glad they are selling them again)!:) You would think that at this point they would be selling the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

But most definitely (for the OP)…as "toMACsh" mentioned...if the Snow Leopard version on the disk you purchase is older than 10.6.6…you will need to use "Software Update" (Apple Menu) to update Snow Leopard to at least 10.6.6 (to get access to the Mac App Store to purchase & download Mountain Lion). More than likely the update you will get is OS 10.6.8 (the latest version of Snow Leopard).
