I am unable to open most docx files, even ones created by me on this computer, which I previously opened with no trouble at all. I keep getting the message 'Word cannot open the existing global template (Normal.dotm). How do I solve this? I'm wondering if it's something to do with my having recenlty changed the "input source" to Welsh in 'Language and text' in System Preferences?

Changing the input source (language) should have no impact on the normal.dotm global template. What may have happened is that normal.dotm is either missing or corrupt. Here is where it should be:

Macintosh HD/Users/you/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/normal.dotm

There's a good chance it's corrupt since if it were missing, Word will just create a new one. You'll need to delete the corrupt one and allow Word to create it new.
